 Responsible for the application, modification and adaptation of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety of tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. Work assignments are in such specialization as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, serology, immunology, urinalysis, and microbiology.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty, including mental and physical demands and OSHA requirements satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs phlebotomy when required and withdraw appropriate quantities of blood by venipuncture, capillary, and/or arterial puncture as required using appropriate age specific techniques. Performs quality control (QC) procedures, proficiency testing, and maintenance on laboratory equipment according to clinic and manufacturer standards, policies and procedures. Follows accreditation standards, regulatory agency requirements and institutional policies regarding blood borne pathogen, internal/external disaster policy, infection control, chemical hygiene, fire and electrical safety. Sets up, operates and/or utilizes appropriate equipment, instruments, containers and other devices and materials to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances. Evaluates the specimens for integrity and analysis, evaluates post analytical test results, distributes test results appropriately and reports test results to medical staff as required. Assists in maintenance of lab supplies to ensure an adequate supply is available. Notifies the Lab Director of low stock. Processes orders for lab supplies on a monthly basis. Maintains laboratory areas and equipment. Keeps lab and medical areas clean and orderly.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Associate's Degree with accreditation from an accredited organization, such as AMT or ASCP & BOC

LANGUAGE SKILLS Employee must speak, hear and read English.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Employee is required to complete basic mathematical computations as related to health information and laboratory reports.

Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to clearly focus vision. Employee must maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of patient data and information according to privacy regulations, including HIPAA. Contract 

Strictly adheres to infection prevention and control guidelines, as specified by OSHA, AAMI, the CDC, and other governing bodies. Follows strict guidelines for the instructions of use on the sterilization process of instruments. Decontaminates and sterilizes medical supplies and instruments for all departments.Inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes medical devices following the manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.

Restocks, labels, and maintains clinic-wide instrument inventory, submits requisitions, collects and distributes instruments, trays, and facility medical equipment. Monitors biological and chemical wash solutions to ensure quality and consistency for the decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. Sorts instruments, trays, and medical equipment, making them available to clinical staff in a timely manner. Operates cleaning and sterilization equipment in the department according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedures. 

Maintain strong working/collaborative relationships with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of services. Attend in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, SDS, OSHA, AAMI, and/or CDC standards.

Report defective or worn/rusted instruments to the supervisor of the appropriate department. Submit warranty repairs or a purchase requisition for replacement instruments. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly equipment monitoring and routine maintenance, including biological spore tests, water testing, and ensures adequate functioning. Monitors and maintains appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies (ex., instructions for use and manuals) as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors. Performs inspections and environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing and in equipment storage areas. Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment. Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED; of clinical experience or experience with bloodborne pathogens;  Central Service or Sterile Processing experience strongly preferred. Must be process-oriented. Excellent attention to detail and legible handwriting. Must be able to multitask and stay focused on the task at hand.
