Strictly adheres to infection prevention and control guidelines, as specified by OSHA, AAMI, the CDC, and other governing bodies. Follows strict guidelines for the instructions of use on the sterilization process of instruments. Decontaminates and sterilizes medical supplies and instruments for all departments.Inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes medical devices following the manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
Restocks, labels, and maintains clinic-wide instrument inventory, submits requisitions, collects and distributes instruments, trays, and facility medical equipment. Monitors biological and chemical wash solutions to ensure quality and consistency for the decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. Sorts instruments, trays, and medical equipment, making them available to clinical staff in a timely manner. Operates cleaning and sterilization equipment in the department according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedures.
Maintain strong working/collaborative relationships with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of services. Attend in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, SDS, OSHA, AAMI, and/or CDC standards.
Report defective or worn/rusted instruments to the supervisor of the appropriate department. Submit warranty repairs or a purchase requisition for replacement instruments. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly equipment monitoring and routine maintenance, including biological spore tests, water testing, and ensures adequate functioning. Monitors and maintains appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies (ex., instructions for use and manuals) as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors. Performs inspections and environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing and in equipment storage areas. Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment. Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED; of clinical experience or experience with bloodborne pathogens; Central Service or Sterile Processing experience strongly preferred. Must be process-oriented. Excellent attention to detail and legible handwriting. Must be able to multitask and stay focused on the task at hand.
REASONING ABILITY Employee must demonstrate ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables; ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram or schedule form. Under direct supervision, makes decisions that directly affect patient safety with high consequence of error.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Certified Registered Central Service Technician preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Employee is regularly required to talk and hear English, stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Required to use computer equipment and delicate dental instruments. Employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee may utilize team lifting techniques or use of mechanical patient lift to assist with lifting or pushing patients over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to clearly focus vision. Employee must maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of patient data and information according to privacy regulations, including HIPAA. Employee participates in clinic performance improvement activities to measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care. Employee participates in clinic involvement and/or committees as needed or assigned to position. Employee must consistently be courteous to patients, staff and visitors.
OSHA CATEGORY Employee works in a clinical setting, and performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. Employee is expected to adhere to safety standards, including appropriate vaccinations, to mitigate risk of exposure.
SAFETY SENSITIVE Due to the safety sensitive nature of this position, medical marijuana license holders who test positive for marijuana will not be qualified for this position.
