A Registered Nurse (RN) for the Family Birthing Center is able to independently assess and evaluate the health status of both labor and neonate patients utilizing objective and subjective data and identifying health care problems. Through the care planning process, the RN collaborates with the patient, family, providers, and others on the health care team to establish realistic and measurable short and long term goals; prioritizing needs through planning, and the implementation of all interventions to include patient education and counseling. The RN must maintain safe and effective care throughout the episode of care through the institution of standard procedures that stabilize each patent's condition or through the prevention of serious complications in emergency situations. Each intervention is evaluated and documented to determine the outcome of care and if additional interventions are required to achieve optimal health outcomes. The RN acts as a patient advocate.
